Cap'n Fatty Goodlander and Carolyn take Wild Card from Thailand to the Mediterranean via the Red Sea. After giving a good description of yacht life in Thailand they head out across the northern part of the Indian Ocean. They must sail past the dreaded Somali pirates, which they do with over 20 other yacts in a semi formal but well organized convoy. Captain Fatty has a lot of electronic resources on his boat, vastly more than people had 20 years ago. The group was in fairly constant, and coded, contact with one another, and also with the naval anti-piracy forces patrolling the area.

Into the Red Sea he chose to follow the western shore along Somalia, instead of the eastern shore by Saudi Arabia (which Web Chiles had done some years before with disasterous results, and Acton in Shrimpy did with curious and often uncomfortable results). Goodlander found the people welcoming and fascinating, and had vastly different, better, time than those who took followed the Saudi Arabian shore.

His experience going through the Suez Canal, and dealing with the Egyptian Canal authorities was infuriating. This was much the same experience of any small boat people who traversed the Suez Canal. Captain Fatty did not hold back in his description of the criminal antics of those people.

Note that Capt. Goodlander is a regular writer for several sailing magazines.

This is a good read, a fast read, which describes the cruising life and richly describes the places visited.
