Service Project at the Cottam Tract of the
Lower Rio Grande Wildlife Refuge
South of Granjeno, Texas

1 October 2011

Some members of Crew 583 participated in a service project
called Rio Reforestation where a tract of cleared farmland
along the Rio Grande south of Granjeno, Texas is being replanted with
native plants to create natural habitat for wildlife.
This is a project of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Valley Proud Enviornmental Council.

Members attending were on site just before 8am when the project officially started.
We signed in individually and 2 additional people, from Brownsville, joined us to complete a working party of 6.
We brought our own shovels and gloves.
We were issued a bit of rope about 8 ft. long with knots at the ends and the middle
to be used to measure the interval between plantings.

We proceeded to the end of a plowed row and were issued a plasitc milk crate full of seedlings of various species of native shrubs and trees.

There was plenty of water available on site.

The event organizers provided a water bottle with holder and a wrist band.

The animals available for holding were a tortoise and 3 snakes. -

No it is not a coral snake... its a king snake.

The organizers fed us with chips, hot dogs and soft drinks.
By noon we were back at home in McAllen.
