Early Maritime Law


Law of Oleron - text . This was codified in Oleron, an island on the Atlantic coast of France in 1152 AD. It was adopted by Elinor of Aquitaine as general maritime law in 1190 and was first printed in 1494 AD.

Barcelona Maritime Law - text Promulgated by James I of Aragon in 1258 AD.

Maritime Law of Rhodes - text . This text is older than the Law of Oleron and may be the major source for the Law of Oleron.

Other early codifications of maritime law include: the Code for Sea Consuls, those from Amalfi (Italy) and Visby (Northern Europe) and of the Hansa league.
