CAPTAIN JOSHUA SLOCUM CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION SCHEDULE
FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 1998

Centennial events will commence with ceremonies at the HERRESHOFF MARINE
MUSEUM, One Burnside St. in Bristol RI, on the pier where Captain Nathanael
Hereshoff welcomed Captain Joshua Slocum. Halsey Herreshoff, grandson of the
famous yacht designer and builder, will speak. There will be presentations by
museum personnel, famous sailors and other dignitaries. The Museum model room
will be open to the public. For information call the Herreshoff Marine Museum

Friday evening at 7:00 pm there will be a REAL RHODE ISLAND CLAMBAKE on the
shore at the newly restored Herreshoff South Wharf. Famous Pare' Clambakes
"with all the fixin's" will be served ($35 with lobster or $26 without). For

SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 1998

The Mayor of Newport has proclaimed Saturday, Captain Joshua Slocum Day. It
will be celebrated with a BOAT PARADE around the NEWPORT inner harbor at 11
am. Visiting and local yachtsmen are invited to participate. Call the
Harbormaster, Jake Farrell, 848-6492. Replicas of Captain Slocum's "Spray"
will re-enact his arrival on this date in 1898.

Famous Welsh boat builder and circumnavigator David Sinnett-Jones may attend,
but his replica of Slocum's "Liberdade" was damaged in a storm and had to
return to the Azores.

At 11:45 am, ceremonies will be conducted by local dignitaries in recognition
of Slocum's historic voyage. at the International Yacht Restoration School, 449
Thames St. in NEWPORT. Three-time America's cup contender and ESPN sailing
analyst, Gary Jobson, and BOC competitor, Tony Lush, will speak. There will be
discussions among several circumnavigators and deep-water sailors and
interviews by the media at an informal reception. Joshua Slocum descendants
will be present. Special postal cancellations will be applied on-site by the

JOSHUA SLOCUM SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL DINNER

The Joshua Slocum Society International will host a Centennial Dinner at 7 pm
in the DOUBLETREE ISLANDER HOTEL - NEWPORT on Saturday evening. Refreshments
will begin at 5 pm. The guest speaker will be Halsey Hereshoff.
Presentations will be made to the noted to solo trans-Atlantic sailor Maureen
Jenkins and to noted marine historian Doug Peck. Circumnavigators David
Sinnett-Jones, Yves Gelinas, Dennis Warner, Leo White and others, will be
recognized. The event is open to the public. Reservations are required (per

SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 1998

The centennial will be celebrated in the Poverty Point section of FAIRHAVEN MA,
where Joshua Slocum rebuilt and launched the Spray and where they returned
after their voyage around the world. The public is invited to join the Joshua
Slocum Centennial Committee of Fairhaven for the day-long festivities.

11 am -- Memorial Service, Seamen's Bethel in nearby New Bedford.

1:30 pm -- Proclamation, with dignitaries and Slocum descendants at the Slocum
Memorial, Pilgrim Avenue, Poverty Point.

2 - 4 pm -- Reception with refreshments, souvenirs, and sea chanteys by Compass
Rose hosted by the Fairhaven Colonial Club at the Coggeshall Memorial House,
Poverty Point.

6 pm -- Casting of memorial flowers into the harbor from a hot-air balloon,
weather permitting.

Sunset -- Lowering of the Slocum pennant, Fort Phoenix.

SAILORS AND BOATERS
The Slocum Centennial Committee of Fairhaven looks forward to welcoming Joshua
Slocum enthusiasts who travel by water by providing two nights free dockage at
Pope's Island Marina, New Bedford. Contact: Mike Yorston, (508- 994-1122).
Free bus service will be provided to the Centennial Dinner in Newport Saturday
night.
