Roland O. Mittelstaedt was born on the family homestead in Fall River County, South Dakota - Near Oelrichs, SD.
Before 1920 the family farm went bankrupt and moved east to northeastern Nebraska where other family members lived.
After some financial reversals, and the family business (a garage where Otto J. repaired cars) burned down the family moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Roland married Phyllis Welker and during their marriage their two sons were born.
After World War II they divorced. Roland got custody of the boys and they were largely raised by their grandmother, Marie Mittelstaedt.
As an adult Roland worked for the U.S. National Weather service for some time in North Dakota,
and for several years on Johnston Island in the middle of the North Pacific Ocean.
He said that the fishing was great there.
After he retired he lived in northeastern Nebraska where many relatives live.
