Gerard E. Mittelstaedt was born in St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
As a child he was known to family as Gerry.
His childhood involved much moving as his father moved about as was the custom for those in active duty with the military. This included 1954-1957 in Spain and Germany, a longish stay in San Antonio, Texas and shorter stays in Greenville, Mississippi and Biloxi, Mississippi where Gerard graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1966.
He worked as a warehouseman at the Base Exchange warehouse at keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi,
After his fathers retirement the family moved to McAllen, Texas in September 1966 while Gerard was in his first year at University of Texas, Austin.
Bachelors Degree (BA) Geography, minor Geology from UT Austin in 1970.
Was an asst. in the Biology Dept. at UT Austin
Worked with Western Geophysical doing oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico 1971.
Further education in computer Science and Library Science at UT Austin 1972
Worked at the Rosenberg Library in Galveston, Texas - Reference and Interlibrary Loan
Worked at McAllen Memorial (public) Library in McAllen, Texas for just under 3 years then
Earned a MLS (Masters in Library Science) at UT Austin graduating in August 1978
Worked as Reference Librarian, Head of AV Department, Asst. Director and lastly Director (August 1980) of McAllen Memorial (public) Library in McAllen, Texas.
Retired 28 February 2006.
Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 583 in McAllen, then Associate Advisor of Venturing Crew 1849 (of the Boy Scouts).
